Starting from the fact that we all work in exchange for something, we know that individuals aim to achieve personal objectives with that something. For some, it’s professional recognition, career advancement, and professional fulfillment. For others, it’s simply money to indulge themselves or to support their families, buy a house, upgrade their car, travel, etc. This leads us to differentiate between short-term goals (buying a car, a new computer, a trip) and long-term goals (career advancement, buying a house, starting a family). All of this can be better understood with Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

  • Ensuring that the employee fits well into their job role. Right from the hiring stage, we need to assess if the person is not only qualified for the position but also enjoys it and will feel comfortable in it. An employee who is not suited to their role will become demotivated, either out of boredom if their abilities exceed the demands of the job or out of stress if they fall short.
