How to get the Great Place to Work certificate

Every year, during springtime, it’s time for the release of rankings. In around 60 countries, the Great Place to Work certificate presents the ranking of the best companies to work for, broken down by size.

A ranking that GPTW has been conducting for almost 30 years, measuring workplace culture, employee experience, and leadership, along with a set of criteria considered universal, fundamental, and decisive for evaluating candidate companies.In recent years, more analysis has been added to recognize companies that offer the best work environment for women, Millennials, and professionals aspiring to innovation, among others. This time, we will explain how to obtain the Great Place to Work certificate.

What is the Great Place to Work certificate?

The Great Place to Work® Institute offers a certification called A Great Place to Work, which validates that organizations meet certain standards or minimum criteria to be recognized as a good place to work.

Each year, more than 10,000 organizations of all sizes apply for certification. Why not? Having this certificate is not simply a “stamp”, nor is it just another certificate. For many companies, achieving this certificate is equivalent to showing a real and instant image of the sentiment that permeates the work environment and, above all, the trust relationship between employees and the organization.

The Great Place to Work certificate represents a benchmark, in relation to the competition, as well as a formal commitment not only to the work environment but also to the development of HR programs; seeking to have a positive impact on employees and the best recognition in the professional market, useful for attracting and retaining talent.

How to obtain the Great Place to Work certificate

The main focus of the Great Place to Work certificate is the trust relationship between the worker and the company, which is considered the key parameter around which the judgment about the workplace revolves.

For an organization to be recognized as a Great Place to Work, it must undergo two key processes: the Trust Index questionnaire and the Culture Brief/Audit.

A questionnaire of about 70 questions sent directly to employees to measure a set of key indicators, ranging from credibility to respect, from equity to cohesion. It must be presented to all employees, and a minimum participation rate is required relative to the size of the organization.

This questionnaire then aims to assess the level of trust employees have in three types of relationships: Company and Managers, Peers, and their own work.

The questionnaire is one of the most important practices of the analysis, where employees evaluate five macro areas of the company:

  • Credibility: Interpersonal communication, competence, and integrity of senior management.
  • Respect: Personal development of the worker, their involvement and care, also from the point of view of health and well-being.
  • Equity: Equality of treatment, fairness, and justice are analyzed.
  • Pride: Satisfaction with individual work, with the work group to which one belongs, and finally with the company’s image.
  • Cohesion: Trust with colleagues, hospitality, and team spirit are evaluated.

Culture Brief/Audit©

It is an audit that looks at the tools and strategies the company has to carry out personnel management policies and practices.

This “culture audit” is prepared by management and is the document that describes the company’s policies in relation to nine areas: Hiring, Celebrating, Sharing, Inspiring, Speaking, Listening, Training, Developing, Caring. These nine areas are further divided into three specific sectors:

  • Leadership: The ability to disseminate the vision and corporate values, listening, and communicating.
  • Development: The ability to grow the company, thank employees, and take care of them.
  • Team: The ability to select and integrate personnel, to share and celebrate successes.

It is a questionnaire with fifteen open questions, which is then sent to the Great Place to Work evaluation team, based on a structured and internationally consolidated evaluation table.

Originality, inclusiveness, human touch, integration, effective alignment between declared values and practiced values, and how these values ​​affect employees’ daily experiences are evaluated.

The way the company builds and communicates its strategy and involves employees in the development and exchange of new ideas is also evaluated. In addition, it is evaluated whether the company is able to respect its values ​​even in difficult times.

A company selected for the Great Place to Work certificate is a place where employees trust the people they work for, feel comfortable with their colleagues and the environment in which they operate. They are proud of what they do and enjoy it. From a business perspective, a “great place to work” is a place where achieving business goals and reaching them is easier thanks to a group of people working together, giving their best in an atmosphere of trust and well-being.

What are the reasons that could lead a company today to want the Great Place to Work certification? Well, the reasons arise from the practice of analysis that GPTW designs for companies that adhere to the program to obtain the certificate. We’ll explain it by breaking down each phase:

The first phase, as previously explained, is when both employees and managers respond to the questionnaire. It’s an evaluation that takes two weeks.

The second phase is when the responses are handed over to GPTW and its consultants, who analyze the questionnaires and take a snapshot of the situation, highlighting the strengths of the company and the areas to intervene to improve the situation.
